Half term is almost upon us, and with Halloween just around the corner, it’s the perfect opportunity to get creative in the kitchen!
If you’re looking for things to do with the kids over the school holidays, a Halloween baking afternoon is a lovely way to keep the kids busy, spend some time together and create some tasty treats along the way.
You don’t need expensive ingredients, specialist equipment or hours of preparation. With a few simple ideas, some colourful decorations and a little imagination, you can turn an ordinary afternoon at home into a spooky baking adventure.
Whether you have young children who love decorating or older children who want to get more involved with mixing and baking, here are some ideas to inspire your half-term plans.
The best Halloween treats don't have to be complicated. Choose simple bakes that children can decorate themselves and let their imaginations do the rest!
1. Make Your Own Ghostly Cupcakes
Cupcakes are a great starting point because everyone can decorate their own.
Bake a batch of vanilla or chocolate cupcakes, allow them to cool completely, then set out white icing, chocolate chips and edible decorations. Children can create ghostly faces, spooky monsters or funny Halloween characters.
For younger children, you can prepare the cupcakes in advance so they can get straight to the fun part. Older children might enjoy measuring the ingredients, mixing the batter and watching their cakes rise in the oven with adult supervision.
The best bit? No two cupcakes need to look the same!
2. Decorate Spooky Spiderweb Biscuits
Turn ordinary round biscuits into Halloween decorations with a little icing.
Cover each biscuit with a base layer of icing, then add circles in a contrasting colour. While the icing is still wet, carefully drag a cocktail stick from the centre towards the edge to create a spiderweb effect.
It's a simple technique that looks impressive without requiring lots of decorating experience.
You could even challenge everyone to create their own Halloween design, from spiderwebs and pumpkins to monsters and creepy eyes.
3. Get Creative with Chocolate Treats
Chocolate is always a popular choice, and there are plenty of ways to turn simple treats into something spooky.
Try decorating brownies or chocolate biscuits with chocolate drizzle, sprinkles and Halloween-themed edible decorations. Orange, purple, green and black can all help create a seasonal look.
Set up a decorating station with a few bowls of toppings and let everyone design their own creations. This works particularly well if you're entertaining several children, as everyone gets to make something different.
Just remember to check ingredient labels for allergies before getting started.
4. Bring Autumn Flavours into the Kitchen
Halloween isn't just about spooky decorations. It's also the perfect time to enjoy those comforting autumn flavours.
Think apple, cinnamon, caramel, ginger and chocolate. These flavours work beautifully in seasonal baking and can inspire everything from simple biscuits to apple cakes.
For an easy activity, try making apple and cinnamon muffins together. Children can help measure ingredients, stir the mixture and divide it between cases, while an adult handles the oven.
You could also experiment with different flavour combinations and ask everyone to vote for their favourite.
5. Hold a Halloween Decorating Competition
If you want to turn baking into a full afternoon activity, why not organise a little Halloween decorating competition?
Prepare a selection of cooled cupcakes, biscuits or brownies, then let everyone decorate their own. You could have categories such as:
• Spookiest creation
• Funniest Halloween face
• Most colourful design
• Most imaginative decoration
You don't need prizes or anything elaborate. The fun is in seeing what everyone creates, and of course, enjoying the treats afterwards!
A little preparation makes baking with children much easier, especially when everyone is excited to get started.
Prepare your ingredients first. Measure out what you need before inviting everyone into the kitchen. This makes it easier for younger children to help and means less time searching through cupboards.
Keep the decorating simple. You don't need dozens of toppings. A few icing colours, chocolate chips, sprinkles and edible decorations can go a long way.
Give everyone their own space. Individual plates or trays make it easier for children to decorate their own creations without everything becoming mixed together.
Choose tasks to suit their age. Younger children can add toppings and decorate, while older children can help measure and mix ingredients. An adult should supervise the use of ovens, hot trays and sharp utensils.
Don't worry about making everything perfect. A wonky ghost or a spiderweb that looks more like a squiggle is all part of the fun. The aim is to enjoy spending time together, not to create picture-perfect bakes.
Of course, not everyone wants to spend half term covered in flour and icing — and that's absolutely fine!
If you'd rather spend your time enjoying Halloween activities together, you can still make the occasion special with a handmade cheesecake from Sally's Baked with Love.
I make baked cheesecakes in a range of flavours, with bespoke options available if you're planning a Halloween party, family get-together or autumn celebration.
My Spiced Apple & Lime Baked Cheesecake is particularly suited to this time of year. It combines the comforting flavours of apple and cinnamon with creamy baked cheesecake and my homemade lime curd, adding a fresh, zesty twist to a classic autumn-inspired combination.
