I want to share a little secret with you: August is one of my favourite times of year, and one of the main reasons comes down to my love of blackberries. There's something magical about these beautiful berries, which are a classic symbol of late summer.
That's why here at Sally's Baked with Love; we’re doing our part to carry on that delicious tradition with our August Flavour of the Month: the Blackberry Cheesecake. Just as the seasons change, so too do my flavour inspirations. Although I don't always follow the seasons strictly in our monthly cheesecake selections, I thought this would be a perfect opportunity to look at what fruits and flavours are currently in season throughout the year. I use this seasonal bounty to inspire my creations. While our classic cheesecakes are perfect year-round, here are some of my favourite fruits to highlight throughout the year.
Spring: As new life emerges, so do tangy, fresh flavours. We love the vibrant taste of Rhubarb and late-spring Strawberries, which are perfect for a zesty, sweet treat.
Summer: This is the season of abundance! Our August Blackberry cheesecake is a prime example, along with summer classics like Raspberry, Cherry, and Gooseberry flavours, all bursting with sun-ripened goodness.
Autumn: As the days shorten, I turn to rich, comforting spices and orchard fruits. Think warm and spicy cheesecakes like Toffee Apple Crumble, Plum, and soon, perhaps a seasonal spiced pumpkin creation.
Winter: Winter calls for festive, cosy flavours. I love to use fruits that complement the season, such as warming Apples and bright Citrus flavours like orange, creating a cheesecake that feels like a warm hug.
The Joy of Fruit Picking
People have been foraging for blackberries to make pies, crumbles, and jams for generations. I have such fond memories of going fruit picking as a child, and it's a tradition that still brings a smile to my face. August is the perfect time to enjoy the simple pleasure of gathering a punnet of freshly picked blackberries. While I rely on a wonderful local supplier for the perfect berries in our professional kitchen, the thought of heading out to a local farm or a hedgerow to collect them for a homemade jam or pie is something I'd still absolutely love to do. It's a fantastic, hands-on activity with children, offering a wonderful way to connect with the food we eat. Just be sure to look up local guidance and advice on safe foraging before you go!
