Where Valentine’s Treats Really Began
Ever wondered why something sweet is the ultimate way to say "I love you"?
Take a journey with me through the history of Valentine’s treats. From the luxury of sugar in the Middle Ages to the "tests of character" in the Victorian era, explore why a handmade bake remains the perfect language of love and how these ancient traditions inspired our latest heart-shaped collection.
The Origin of the Sweetheart
It turns out that gifting sweets has been the ultimate way of showing love for centuries. Back in the Middle Ages, sugar was an incredibly expensive luxury. While the day is named after St. Valentine, the romantic association actually began in the Middle Ages.
It was during the time of Geoffrey Chaucer that the concept of courtly love took hold. In his 1382 poem, Parlement of Foules, he described St. Valentine’s Day as the time when birds gather to choose their mates, marking the first time the day was linked to romance. Suitors began using poems and small gifts to win over a beloved. Because sugar was such a rare luxury at the time, giving a sweet treat was the ultimate grand gesture—literally a taste of wealth and devotion.
The 18th-Century Heart Cake Lottery
The heart shape we all know and love has deep roots in baking. In the 1700s, Heart Cakes were a staple of Valentine’s Eve celebrations. These were small cakes baked in tin moulds—very similar in spirit to my current mini cheesecakes I make.
In some traditions, these cakes were part of a romantic lottery where names were drawn to find a match for the year. It is lovely to think that while my recipes are modern, the joy of a handmade, heart-shaped bake has stayed the same for hundreds of years.
Victorian Sentiment and Kisses
The Victorian era was when the edible love token truly flourished. This was the age of elaborate cards and hand-wrapped sweets called Kisses. These were not just gestures; they were carefully crafted treats tucked inside paper crackers along with romantic verses. It was during this time that the test of character came into play—giving a handmade gift proved you had put in the time and effort for your person.
The Rise of Galentine’s Day
Fast forward to the present, and we see the beautiful rise of Galentine’s Day on February 13th. This shift reminds us that love is not just a romantic pursuit—it is a community celebration. Whether it is a group chat finally meeting up for a dessert grazing table or friends sharing a box personal Midi Pots, the focus remains on appreciation and kindness.
Handmade with Love, Every Single Day
Looking back at history makes me realise that a handmade bake is a universal language that never goes out of style. Whether it is a Valentine’s surprise, a Galentine’s celebration, or a 2026 wedding, every order is freshly prepared in my kitchen specifically for your request. You do not need a special date on the calendar to be kind—you just need a good fork and a moment of pure indulgence.
